Jimmy Valentine is the main character in the story “A Retrieved Reformation” by O. Henry. He is a clever and skilled safe-cracker who is very good at breaking open safes and stealing money. At the beginning of the story, Jimmy is shown as a smart thief who is released from prison. He quickly goes back to his old ways and continues robbing banks.

Jimmy is very confident in his work. He has a set of special tools and knows exactly how to break into safes without getting caught. He moves from place to place and uses fake names. But everything changes when he visits a small town called Elmore.

In Elmore, Jimmy sees a girl named Annabel Adams, and he falls in love with her. This is the turning point in his life. He decides to change for good. He gives up his criminal life, opens a shoe store, and becomes a kind and honest man. He uses the name Ralph D. Spencer and becomes respected in the town. He even plans to marry Annabel.

Jimmy’s final test comes when a child gets locked inside a bank vault. No one can open the vault, but Jimmy still has his tools. He risks everything and uses his old skills to save the child’s life. He knows this might expose his past, but he does it anyway.

In the end, the detective who was chasing him sees his change and lets him go free.
